Oh Lord. Is U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, who believes that manmade global warming is "the greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people," losing the public relations battle on that issue

You know, if this happened in fandom, everyone would have called bullshit by now, and he'd either be wanking in attempt to cover up the splooge, or he'd have deleted his LJ, never to return again.
Actually, that's not a bad idea! Politics should be run like fandom!
So we have the guy in charge of the Senate Environment Committee thinking that global warming is not man-made and the guy in charge of the Senate Commerce Science and Technology Committee thinking that the Internet is a series of tubes. And let's not forget Senator Frothy Mixture of Lube and Fecal Matter That Is Sometimes The Byproduct of Anal Sex. Man, we need to get these idiots voted out. Who the fuck voted for them, anyway?
Nothing - and I mean *nothing* - is ever 'like the Nazis/Third Reich/Hitler' again. EVER. Even if Hitler were to get cloned and take over the world we world and kill a bajillion people, it would still be called "Really fuckinhg evil and bad" because no. Like I said, nothing is like the Nazis.
Since a part/corrolary of Godwin's Law is that the first person to mention the Nazis loses, can we now call the "debate" on global warming closed, since Inhofe has officially surrendered for the deniers?
Global Warming

Coming from Britain it is refreshing to read that at least some Americans are aware of the catastrophe awaiting us all unless we change our use of energy. As by far and away the largest producer of green house gases and the only super power on the planet the world needs America to take the lead in combatting this problem. As you say only the most stubborn of your politicians can deny the facts staring them in the face. However watching CNN News the other day I began to suspect that they are beginning to prepare the American public for yet more lies and misinformation. The strategy if I'm right is once again brilliant, a bit like declaring war on a noun. This time their strategy seems to be, as we can no longer deny it, blame China. This will fit in perfectly with the fact that as China emerges to challenge American global hegemony they will have to be "dealt with". If the American public is led to believe that the extreme weather conditions are down to Chinese economic growth it will only take a short leap to see them as even more of

Getting them to admit there is a problem is only the beginning.
Good (and discouraging) point. But just the fact that global warming is again a major topic here, when by my recollection, it's been mostly off the radar since the 1990s, is step in the right direction.
I'm a little less pessimistic about the China propaganda. I don't think we're actually being set up for a war with China, because (barring an actual Imperial Presidency), Bush won't be president for that much longer. I think it's just a convenient out from actually doing anything ourselves. Like, "Oh well, China's gonna blacken the skies with coal anyway, never mind about raising those CAFE standards or enforcing the Clean Air Act. Go ahead, buy that 12 mpg SUV. What difference does it make?" Etc.

Evil, evil people who must be dragged out back and shot. AHEM.
But yeah, it's fucked up when politics makes fandom seem sane by comparison. Bleh.
