Open thread: what you want for this country

I haven't been watching tv today, other than the footie, but I imagine there's been a lot of programming centering around self-congratulatory celebration of the United States. If you've been surfing the blogosphere at all, you've probably run across the Declaration of Independence, and less blithe ruminations on this nation's past and present ( Read more... )

I'll start.

I want to see us have a real, unfixed, unstolen, Presidential election in 2008. Obviously I want the Democratic nominee to win, but I don't see that happening unless the paper-trail-free machines, the Republican caging lists, etc., are put out of commission first.

I want accountability. I want checks and balances. I want oversight. I want there to transparency to our system.

I want a government that's about serving the goddamn people rather than picking their pockets.

I want a country that refuses to let any of its citizens be homeless or hungry unless they want to. There's too much money wasted on bullshit in this country for them to say it's a problem that can't be solved.

Oh, and elected officials who read, spell, speak in coherent sentences, and write stirring words. "...I look at what isn't and say 'why not?'" (And he wasn't even elected!)

Fucking pipe dream...

I want a leader who can restore the sense that we are all in this together. Something FDR stood for. And JFK. And even, though I disagreed with him, Reagan. Bush does not want to lead all the people. He wants to help 51% of the people inflict their values on everyone else. We need a President who wants to make Americans feel like one people.

Echo what everyone else says.

Also, I just want to see an America that instead of trying to "spread democracy" chooses to "exemplify liberty". We should not be running around the world trying to beat despots into submission, but we should be setting the example of freedom and liberty here at home instead of starting our own low-key "moral majority" despotism.

Even though the Amercian Revolution was not all about freedom and democracy as our schools teach, it still set off a wave of the *idea* of America. I think that a lot of the freedom throughout the world today can be traced back to inspiration from what they did here, at home, 230 years ago. I just wished that we could get back to that. Set the example at home and have an example of liberty that the world may want to voluntarily follow.

Whew! Long winded!
