Long overdue. The only other NATO country with special rules for gays in the military is Turkey. These are not rules that should be in a modern military.
Absolutely a good thing. I have two very close friends who are gay and served our country honorably. It's sad that they had to hide who they were while they were in the service.
After running on a campaign promise to allow gays to serve openly in the military, the best Clinton could come up with was DADT. Apparently it take the Dems an administration or two to work the bugs out of campaign promises.
To paraphrase Randi Rhodes... Who the hell are we to tell someone willing to put their lives on the line to protect us: "Sorry, you're not fit to serve"? These are men and women, WHO HAPPEN TO BE GAY, who love our country enough to go out there and defend our freedoms. More power to them, and about damn time.
(I'll second l555l's and madscience's comments on the timing: both of the review, and of the legislation itself, but that's a separate point. I don't think we should lose sight of what a cool thing this is in and of itself.)
