Now, photographing in public spaces generally gives me the heebies.  Because my work is confined mostly to the stage, that's where I feel safe and comfortable.  Street photography has never been my thing.  Which is part of the reason why I'm taking a class at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education (Night and Low Light

Note that:
1. Three years ago, the policy was different. (You needed a photo pass.)
2. Common complaints because of situations like this led to them changing the policy.
3. No one got educated about the new policy.

Expect to deal with this any time you do photography on the T.
