At 4:59 on Monday, a homeless man lit up a cigarette in the magazine nook. Busybody patrons dispatched me immediately to deal with the "scary homeless guy who shouldn't be allowed to read since he is ugly and gives kids and soccer moms nightmares." thank you for giving some insight into the "why librarians are so freakin' uptight" question. it really is a very strange institution and people have strange expectations from it. you think it'll be better in canada, eh?

I think it will be at least slightly better in Canada for three reasons: 1) the cold winters force Canadians to read more, on average, than Floridians and therefore the former becomes more literate and understands the nature of a library as a book lending institution that also helps answer questions, 2) Toronto has a much lower average age, and thus, hopefully, it has less sufferers of dementia and senility, and 3) Toronto wages are much better than those offered in the American south, about a North American average, instead of skating the poverty line in Florida, unless your cousin is King of Town, or you're a cardiologist or you're an auto mechanic.
