I'm a little worried about the film though. Largely because they decided to drop one of the most beautiful titles in the world for one that makes no sense, because the alethiometer is neither a compass nor is it made of gold (I think). It's making me not want to get my hopes up in case they've ruined anything else. I love the book too much to be disappointed. :(
Yes, I have similar issues with the title. What the heck is wrong with Northern Lights?
I try not to get my hopes up for film adaptations, although I wish that just once they would get it absolutely *right*. I mean, take Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - great film, shame about how they botched the entire Marauders plot and made the 'werewolf' look like a skinny hairless giant chihuahua on stilts, not to mention the Patronus that didn't make sense because it only appeared as a stag when Harry was lying there looking at it, nearly unconscious!
That said, I haven't seen or heard enough about 'The Golden Compass' yet to be disappointed. Although come to think of it, if they can't get the title right, what are the chances for the rest of the film? :(
I must read the book again when the exams are done. Grrr, exams.
apparently it's called the Golden Compass in the US.(not sure why) And, of course, if they didn't name the film after the US title, Americans wouldn't know what it was...
