This began as a response to a concern about using small samples from copyrighted works for a weekly "Japanese←→English translation challenge" event we are trying to start over at japanese. I started replying to the concern with my own opinion on the matter, and then after I was writing for several hours I realized what a huge tangent I had gone off on. ( Read more... )

Ah yeah, I completely missed that point about places where certain media is unavailable! It makes me angry to think of it, because it's so unfair. So I don't blame people in your situation for going to that kind of website, either ( ... )

Yeah, that was what irked me the most about MangaFox--I kept seeing their advertisements at fanfiction.net and it made me angry because I knew if they could run those advertisements, they were making money somehow, (or trying to make a lot more) and no doubt it was off all the manga they didn't own the rights to. At least other sites don't make the fact that they're reeling in money so obvious--servers do need money to continue running, after all, so advertising or requests for donation is natural enough. However, upkeep is different from profit. Profit is about the most corrupt purpose of distributing works illegally, so it has a special place for disgust in my heart.

But yeah...That sounds awesome. 80's manga, lol. There's a special place in my heart for the art of series like SwanI also have some stuff (mostly tankōbon) that ranges from the early 80s to current. A lot of it is either in the shōjo or shōnen genre, since series aimed at the younger crowd tends to have furigana. I also have some stuff that could be pretty hard, like ( ... )

some basic tenants of fair use I pronounce it like that too, but it's actually 'tenets'. Just saying ( ... )

Tenets, tenants.... XDDD Oh dear, they are indeed two different things. Looks like one of those spellings I need to be more careful with.
