looking at this purely from the standpoint of written language since that is the angle here, Usagi is actually a romanization of the name うさぎ and why this would matter in a dubbed format is beyond me since they're SAYING the name, not fucking writing it, so who cares if Usagi is only a romanization of うさぎ?

It's important for two reasons.

First, because people still insist Usagi Tsukino means rabbit of the moon, but it is a pun. This is critical because people pass along misinformation.

It's also important to get people to actually learn, not appropriate or speak over other cultures in the name of representation. It's like the young person who claims to be an expert on Japan who peppers his speech with Japanese words then freaks out when seeing actual kana when offered to chat in Japanese and doesn't understand what the symbols mean.

Lian Hua: Localization is a great tool for carrying messages across linguistic barriers. Back when I was a child, I had no internet so I had no idea what Usagi meant. I couldn't translate anything ( ... )

Lian Hua: So we should respect the big corporation and not the creator and artist? Why, just because it happens to cater to what you want?

No, because the corporation made the material known as the anime. You would give the creator rights over something she did not create, and sadly, that is the case now.

Iscariot: IT MAKES NO SENSE. This page is the dumbest on this site. What is the argument here? She's acting like Toei selling the license to dub Sailor Moon to DiC is some sort of "Official Stamp of Approval" from Toei that validates the name Serena, even though that's the name DiC decided on. So now ViZ comes along and dubs the anime with the original names, but somehow the fact that Toei also chose to sell the license to ViZ doesn't hold the same weight.

This was written prior to Viz obtaining the license. If you had bothered to read the entire site before writing this, you'd note that the site is no longer active. Beating a dead horse, much?

This is all just some twisted logic created to try and make it seem as if "Serena ( ... )

Oh god, you guys hooked a fish. And the arguments are still ridiculous.

I love how 20 paragraphs boils down to "We just happen to prefer the latter". Wow, that's the first time you've been honest throughout this whole meaningless onslaught! You like the name because you want things nice and simple and nostalgic and American, and foreign stuff makes you feel weird and uncomfortable. Just be an adult and own your opinion, even if it's shit.

(BTW Lian/Iscariot, are you guys legit married? That is cute.)

Hello!

I and Iscariot are very good friends and we adore each other, but we are married only on the astral plane. Which, according to some, is as legitimate a marriage as any. :)

Yes, a fish was hooked because I'm easy to troll. It's ridiculous of me to expect you to reply to what was actually written and not a strawman.

I'm not owning an opinion you made up on the spot. You're the one calling "foreign stuff" "weird and uncomfortable." You are the one putting the racism there by not actually responding to the actual words as written. You're not even twisting words. You ignore them.
