Not yet acquainted with midrash on Tubal-Kain and the invention of music? The narrative also exists in an Arabic form (ivention of strings). As for Greek traditions, ever heard of Pan and Syrinx? Pan and Echo? Alos, reading Ovid's Pyramus et Thisbe is worthwhile. Just to name a few...

I had forgotten about Tubal-Kain, and I only know the brief words about him in Genesis.

Sorry, my mistake. It's Jubal, of course, Gen 4:21. According to Midrash Rabbah, he invented the organ and the flute, but according to Midrash ha-Gadol, Jubal invented all musical instruments. As regards ancient Greece, Pythagoras shouldn't go unmentioned who, according to the legend, once heard the different sounds of a hammer which led him to conclusions of certain intervals (and so on).
