I actually agree with you. Volunteering to meet society's needs for little/no pay sounds great, and is even feasible in small doses, but most people need to pay their bills. In fact, the people who make the most money are the ones who are in the best position to contribute, (and the majority do, btw), so the argument actually works in the direction that one should strive for more income so that one can do more good. And as for "this country wasn't built...", actually, it was big business (or what passed for it back then) that invested in fledgeling experiments with a very clear intent on making a profit. Capitalism works.

we seem to be at a point in society where more people are wiling to spend an uncomfortable amount of money for relatively useless but convenient product (see also: beatz headphones, i-anythings, and touchscreen tablets that nobody seems to remember existed back in the 90s) but rather than lose a small (to them) amount of money on a new idea, companies are spending big dollars on a sure thing. and then upcharging the hell out of those who are actually willing to try their product ( ... )
