Movie: D.E.B.S.

D.E.B.S. busts apart the usual film genres: it's a action movie, it's a comedy, it's a lesbian romance, and the combination is absolute magic.

The film's premise of the film is that there is a secret government crime-fighting agency of kickass schoolgirls called the D.E.B.S., which provides the basis for a light-hearted sendup of spy movie cliches (think Austin Powers, but a lesbian comedy) and some delightfully cheesy action scenes. The central character is Amy, D.E.B.S. poster child, whose life plan is totally rearranged when she falls for the supervillain Lucy Diamond.

It's hard to do justice to this film by describing the plot, so perhaps I'll just mention my 4 favourite things about it:

1) the great characterization and wonderful minor characters, including Ninotchka the assassin who wanted to be a ballerina, Scud the villainous sidekick with romance in his soul, and Miss Petrie, who I can only describe as like Glee's Sue Sylvester, but more so.

2) the fantastic sense of humour that runs through every detail, from the costumes, to the dialogue, to the parody of absurd spy movie technology.

3) the realistic and charming depiction of a teenage romance, including the awkward nearly-kisses and failure to smoothly remove a bra.

4) the number and variety of female characters, largely in roles that are almost-exclusively male in most films.

Put them together, and it's clear why this film was chosen for screening across BC as part of the anti-homophobia Out in Schools program. It's a fun, original, feel-good movie, and one of my very favourite queer films. If your interest is piqued then I encourage you to check out the trailer.
