Title: Odds On
Author: TheSummoningDark (the_summoning_d
Fandom: Firefly
Pairing/characters: Inara Serra, Jayne Cobb, Kaylee Frye, Simon Tam, River Tam. Onesided Kaylee/Inara
Rating: PG-13 for implications of sex
Disclaimer: All belongs to the almighty Joss
Prompt: 317. "Five people on Serenity who weren't entirely heterosexual"
Summary: Set during 'War Stories' - Inara's newest client provokes an unusually reflective mood in the crew.
Warnings: Minor spoilers for 'War Stories'
Author's Notes: This fic was born of the horrified moment where the writer looks at a calendar and suddenly realises "oh hell, I've got fic due today" (At around half past eleven at night, too). But while I didn't have the luxury of waiting for the lightning-strike of inspiration, I think it turned out okay.

Odds On

i- Inara

She smiles graciously and takes the councillor's hand, calmly ignoring the eyes she feels on her back. They don't matter. She lives for moments like this, when someone lights up and she can tell that she is, in some small way, making their life better. More bearable.

She has fewer female clients. Mostly it's for simple, practical reasons: that for a myriad of reasons men are more likely to call upon a Companion's services, that she seems to be spending more and more time in the backwaters of the 'verse where such things are frowned on. But she also has higher standards for female clients, because it's not purely business and it matters more.

ii- Jayne

In Jayne's life, there have always been five simple rules: Never waste food, never waste good booze, keep an eye on your money, treat women well, and never turn down good sex.

It's an easy code to live by and it suits him well. Getting picky on grounds of gender would be breaking rule #5, and he doesn't want to do that. As far as he's concerned, there are two very pretty ladies about to get it on, and he's not going to waste the mental images while they're fresh.

The moral issues never cross his mind. He heads for his bunk.

iii- Kaylee

She knows she's staring but she can't quite stop. She knew Inara took female clients, sure. No problem. Seeing it, though, brings a few things home. Okay, so maybe she'd thought about it. Weren't that many people on the boat, a long time between stops. Not much choice: after all, Zoe and Wash are taken, and River's too young, and Simon's oblivious, and Jayne is...well, Jayne. And you'd have to be blind not to think Inara beautiful. She learned a long time ago that you take pleasure where you find it, and as long as no-one gets hurt and everyone's happy, what everyone else thinks can go hang.

She understands. She doesn't mind. She determinedly doesn't notice how much more this bothers her than when Inara brings male clients home.

She's not jealous at all.

iv- Simon

He's not naive. Between the somewhat depraved high society on Osiris and everything else he's seen way out here, you learn to take the strangest of happenings in stride. But still...same-sex relationships are the sort of thing that tends to be quietly ignored: it happens, but one doesn't go around talking about it. And here, without any seeming shred of self-consciousness, Inara is leading this woman to her shuttle to...he jerks his imagination up short. He reminds himself sternly that it's none of his business. He doesn't want to know.

(Except he does. He's almost certain he should find the idea disturbing. But he doesn't. And that worries him more than anything else.)

v- River

Simon is confused and it makes her giggle, because he really is such a boob and he makes life far more difficult for himself than it has to be. Inara likes making her clients happy, and when she does she's happy, and River wants everyone to be happy because then their minds are warm and soft and fuzzy like blankets and she can curl up under them to hide from the monsters like she did when she was little. It doesn't matter who makes them happy. River wishes she had someone who could make her warm and soft and fuzzy, because then she could protect herself.
