Awesomely done. This prompt was one of mine (or at least I had a prompt a lot like it before the final list got compiled), and I was thrilled to see it claimed, and I really, really like how this turned out. Setting the fic during Season 3 with Dean's deal breathing down their necks added an unexpected poignant twist and urgency to the situation. You really made the boys' different identities fit with their personalities and experiences in a way that felt exceptionally genuine. :)

Hi! You won't be surprised to hear that I loved your prompt! I chose it because the identities you assigned them in the prompt worked so well with what I see on the show, but I thought about writing it as an AU fic, where Dean had sex exclusively with men. Writing for this ficathon always makes me think.

Thanks!

Hi! :) I have to say I would have been thrilled to see the AU idea you had for this too. :D (I am just greedy when it comes to fic). One thing I think came through in this fic (and it could just be me projecting my understanding of Dean onto it), is Sam seems to think Dean doesn't want to identify as queer or bi because of some internalized homophobia, whereas Dean doesn't identify because he just doesn't think that kind of label is important. Which of course, Sam would have never thought of, so it's a huge and important revelation for him too.

Yeah, that's what I was going for. There must have been some moment where Sam, who has been socialized to think that it's sort of a right and a duty for queer people to be out and represent, considers this belief in the context of his brother, who is wanted by the FBI for all kinds of crimes and who has chosen not to be a part of any community. Also, I think that while Sam might be right about the extent to which Dean sought John's good opinion, they have different ideas about John actually would have cared about.

Sorry that I'm rambling a little -- this was my first SPN fic. Sometime, I definitely want to write confident, masculine, well-adjusted gay!Dean.

This is just so very real - both in terms of their voices and how true you are to the characters, and in how valid and believable their different outlooks on sexuality and identity are.

I wound up really interested in Vic and his family too. That journal could be a novel by itself :)

Thank you. This is my first time writing in the fandom, so I'm glad the feel worked for you.

Poor Vic. Sorry I killed you, queer character of color.

I love the banter and back-and-forth of this so much. I miss when the show had this kind of relationship. Captain Fairness Sam and Relaxed Definitions Dean.

The Coffin family was very real, especially compared to Sam's longing for and rejection of his own father, and Sam's awareness that he will never know him, and how he fears the same about Dean. But Dean won't be pinned to a definition either.

This was artfully written because it felt so very natural and casual, but addressed so much.

That's exactly right. I think I need icons.

It can be a challenge to write a story about an Issue that's not just one character thinking or two characters arguing. I had a lot of trouble with this, so it's gratifying to hear it worked. Thanks for reading and commenting!

I don't have anything insightful to say, but I just really liked this. Every bit of it.
