Oh. Oh wow. This is... wow. Am speechless and loving this and... wow. Also, am incredibly pressed for time at the moment, but I shall return to read this again (more slowly and carefully and not via my phone, lol) tomorrow and have more detailed feedback. But yeah, had to say now: wow. This is perfect. <3 Totally worth the wait.

You did such an amazing job with this fic! And there are so many parts that I love!

The way that you captured the nuances of their relationship was wonderful. From everything to them discussing having Adrian killed to the last scene, felt authentic!

And you even made me like Charles and Michael!

Honestly, I really didn't do all that much. Your fic was already perfect when I got it!!

Madeline and Paul have never been my favorite characters, but you have written very convincing versions of them in their pre-series lives here -- much more fallible and so more engaging, at least for me.

I like big swaths of their dialog, but this

“We usurped the crown and didn’t kill the monarch,” Madeline says calmly. “That never ends well.”

is particularly nice!

Thank you! I found it interesting to write them at this stage in their lives--they were ruthless enough to overthrow Adrian, but they're not quite the Paul and Madeline we saw on the show. They're inexperienced, a little more emotional, and like you said, more fallible. I'm glad the characters were convincing for you.

I just saw this -- what fun to read another story about their earlier days in command. I particularly enjoyed this view of her relationship with Charles. I know their interactions on screen were brief, but I did believe that there was some sort of real tie between them -- could have been love, or friendship, or respect... but it seemed real, and present. So I liked this take on that history....

Thank you very much. I too definitely got that vibe from their brief interactions on the show--I suppose that shows what good actors AW and the guy who played Charles (Stephen Berkoff, I think?) are. Anyway, I'm glad you liked it.

I'm late getting to this, but it was so worth it!!

This is brilliant and twisty and works PERFECTLY with canon - and you've written the characters beautifully. There's a sad sort of air to this whole story, because nothing ends well for anyone here, and yet it's maybe the best ending possible under the circumstances. I love your take on this.

And this:

“I do not rely on luck,” she says quietly.

Just sums it up so well -- both the story and the character!

Thank you! I'm especially flattered that you liked this because you've written an awesome version of pre-canon--and I'm glad that mine somewhat measured up. I tried to show the axe hanging over everyone's head without being too morbid (after all, they're pretty much at the height of their power here, they're younger, they're not burned out) yet you can already see the cracks in their relationship. It is sad. I'm glad that came through for you. ;)
