Books and musing

So, Banned Books Week starts tomorrow, and here is an excellent post about it, with a whole passel of nifty icons to spread the love. Thank you unovis_lj for the link and the info!

I'm thinking that a copy of And Tango Makes Three needs to come and live at my house.

And, a book review/commentary thing I've been meaning to do for nearly a year now --

I wish they had an icon that said "I encourage my children to read banned books"

I need to make a new one, the kids have gotten so old! {while I remain totally young!}

I think the Darkover books are best read when you are between 12 and 20. I recall getting to the realization that Bradley wasn't that good a writer after 20 or so of them. *G*

She created a good universe, but she didn't really develop the characters, and it seemed to me that she never really ended a book where the end seemed natural.

The Spell Sword & Forbidden Tower are not my favourite Darkover so I haven't read them in years, but I always thought it was interesting that she went back and rewrote the other 2 early Darkover books (to give them more depth and character insight) but not Spell Sword. Maybe she figured Forbidden Tower expanded enough on that story?

The writing doesn't always stand up, now, but she did raise some interesting ideas for the time, and I still love the worldbuilding of Darkover.

I keep hearing fascinating things about ACtW. Must add it to the To Be Read pile!

....huh. Thank you. I've got new things to bookmark on my amazon list now, because I know exactly what you mean about Spell Sword (and all the Darkover books in general, which I still read, along with the Pern books, once every few years mostly as light braincandy, no heavier (less heavier, really) than most fanfic - fun, but not at all what I remember from my first reading of them) but I haven't heard of the wolves book and now I'm curious. Yay, new books!
