Someone is hoping they can scare you into telling them where Carl is. Or get the money out of you instead.
Since you aren't Carl and you don't owe them any money. Just be polite but firm if any police show up. But they probably didn't send any, since police rarely get involved unless a major crime is involved.

The problem is that they assume (probably rightly) that the person who really does owe them money will cheerfully and sincerely lie about their whereabouts and identity and will enlist all their friends, relatives, roommates, and any other potential lead on their location to cheerfully and sincerely lie about any knowledge of said person. So no matter how much you protest your ignorance, you're only behaving how they expect a guilty person or associate of a guilty person to act
