In season one, yes, and to a lesser extent into season 2 and 3, but no. The show also stopped being about the Friendship of Legend pretty early on as well. SV started that way but quickly became "The Adventures of Pretty Aliens and Their Pretty Teen Friends With Problems."

That's true. That's the thing that annoys me most about Smallville. Whenever I think about it, it's so frustrating because they had all the right pieces, and so much potential, but they didn't fit them together in the brilliant way they could have.

Oh true, Clark's things are much more subtle, and when you list them like that, that does make sense (especially the one in Heat, which is one of my favorite moments in Smallville just for the fun of it haha). Some of that has always annoyed me though. So much of the friendship is just...not in the show. You have to infer it. You're right, all the signs are there. The friends complaining, the parents worried. But overall, each episode there's only like two minutes of Clark and Lex actually being friends. Maybe it should be a mark for the show, for the fact that the friendship is there but in little gestures like the ones you mentioned, but after a while, solid evidence can be very appreciated.

Oh, and I remember Stray, and you have a good point there. I meant more in the drastic way that Lex always took it when he and Clark were breaking apart, but I do remember that moment, and it does show something :)

{nod} I hate inferring - makes it look like sloppy writing. But shows with multiple characters have their time constraints with who gets how much air time, and... o.o It really makes for weird storylines sometimes, going by the on-air requirements. Every time Clark and Lex are together in the show, everything just brightens up and the scenes are terrific - more of that would have been awesome ( ... )

In universe, I think it's pretty clear throughout the show that Clark does care very much for Lex. The difference I think has a lot to do with the fact that within this particular timeframe Clark has a thriving inner circle with whom he's allowed to share everything, and Lex has absolutely no one but Clark. Thus, I think Lex often assumes their friendship rides on far less than it really does. He feels insecure and wants constant reassurance from Clark, and it's a need Clark is mostly oblivious to simply because it's something he can't relate to ( ... )

I'm going to break from the grain and agree with you that Lex had a lot more invested in this relationship than Clark did. Clark does begin spending a lot of time with Lex in the first season, but he doesn't open himself up or give Lex a lot of feedback. I think because Lex gives SO much and tries to always make himself available/helpful in some way, Clark quickly begins to take their relationship for granted because he has a lot of friends and family around him who generally make demands of his time, instead of just being THERE whenever Clark needs him ( ... )

That all makes a great deal of sense, and I agree with all of it. I'm not sure if this is the right phrasing, but while Lex has been more emotional dedicated to the friendship, I think that Clark has always been very possessive about it. The feeling's mostly due to things that you said, such as Clark getting rather unhappy whenever Lex appears to have someone else in his life he can be close to. Plus the fact that he thinks he has this right to judgment with Lex so often, bursts into his house, yada yada. Again, I'm not sure if possessive is the right word, but the one I'm thinking of isn't coming to me ( ... )
