William's flirting strategy is quite a failure overall. He doesn't put enough effort in it, and when he does, he does in a way people do not take him seriously in the majority of cases. He hasn't still figured what exactly he is doing wrong and is too busy anyway with his life to bother fix it.

And that is exactly what drove Isaak crazy with jealousy while they were in Londinium. Isaak never knew if William was being serious or if William just behaved like that to all the girls. And of course Isaak being a timid girl himself never quite had the courage to do something dramatic like yell “Shut up, you fool and kiss me” to resolve the matter.

(I can imagine the digressions too though only deliberately if he’s trying to misdirect or turn something sombre into an amusing anecdote because he doesn’t want to dwell on an unhappy moment in his past.)
