Hee - thing is, I bet Amal was just anticipating - his folks probably WOULD have flipped out over him 'being involved' with an American girl, since this happened before his mom's illness and his family's subsequent mellowing-out/realignment of perspective.

And I could see TJ's working, too - it fits in between the time Mike kicked him out and right around when got picked up/hired on by P. I hadn't really thought much about it, but it fits, somehow, that he wouldn't have had much experience with 'chaste' intimacy, at least sexually. He's had some experience with familial/platonic love by that point, during his time being cared for by Norm and Mike (and taking care of Norm), but until a couple years later, hmmm... I guess at that point, "sex", to him, is neither good nor bad, just a means to an end.

(ETA: though I do wonder how closely TJ associates love with sickness/death...)
