I love Merry and Pippin, sob. Frodo and Sam can go jump off a cliff.

The two pairs are tender in their own way, it's just that Frodo and Sam get practically one entire book on their own, and main couples can get tiresome in any fandom. ;D

It was okay at first in the books, but I started skimming over the pages after a while. In the DVDs I fast-forward through their parts after I saw it once (I've watched Two Towers and Return of the King at least 2 dozen times).

Well, you know me, I'm kind of not really a main pairing kind of person in a lot of fandoms in the first place. /cough

I think the presence of Gollum is what makes it so tiresome in the movies. In the books, Tolkien stops to describe ROCKS way too often.

I know. ;D

Or well, the two of them really = ♥

They are. But they (unlike Frodo and Sam, who are there for each other alone) share their love with their human companions. : )

Don't know if this is on topic of off topic really, but... I might be a bit of a perv-hobbit-fancier, but I can't really look at Merry & Pippin as a pair(ing!). Although I really love their relationship!! What are your thoughts?

Also, tbh I really love Frodo and Sam's relationship in that they confide only in each other, and find hope and comfort through the company. Which is one thing I think the movie really lacked.... the little descriptions like rocks, but especially the exchanges between them, like when Sam wants to drink the water to make sure it's not poisoned or the thing with the rope, is really where I think Tolkien shines. Haha. I think I'm in minority?

It depends on what you see as a pair(ing). I think of these characters in Tolkien's spirit and, although there is open confesion of love, mutual love and obsession, I don't really think of them as having any sexual involvement. It's all very platonic to me, in the literal sense of "platonic". And Plato knew a lot about the love between male "friends". :D

They confide only in each other because there is no one else, but remember how taken they both were by Faramir. And no, the descriptions of rocks were nothing little. They were overly abundant, which was a good way to keep in mind the aridness of their mission. I think there is a good reason why they couldn't keep all their exchanges as they were in the books: it would have looked and sounded even MORE gay. It did already look a bit gay onscreen, and I heard people snicker at many points with Sam. The way they kept looking at each other, "Kiss him already!" was flashing in many of our minds, too. ;D

The way the hobbits are paired up is so heartwarming and makes me think that Tolkien MUST have known. I mean, I know Deep, Penetrating Friendship Between Men was completely ok during his time, but surely he's heard of the people with the green carnations...?

He was, after all, contemporary of E.M.Forster, the author of "Maurice". And I love what the Wikipedia implies of Tolkien and C.S.Lewis' friendship interferring at some point in their marriages. Tolkien seemed to have known what it was "to be divided", like Sam with Frodo and Rosie. Although Sam, like Tolkien, remained with his wife (with whom he had many children and lived happily) when his best friend "drifted away".
