A discussion I’m involved in on the MENSA site had one member independently think up the idea of replacing the income tax with a sales tax. He and I are very far apart politically (something he noted during the discussion), but I agree with him on this. Since I live in a state that doesn't have an income tax, switching to a national sales tax would mean not having to file individual tax paperwork. Personally, I would find it a lot less stressful if I didn't have to keep working out how much money I need to be earmarking for taxes at the end of the year.

Indeed. The "pay as you go" concept is simple, and keeps folks out of trouble.

I whole-heartedly agree with you about ditching the income tax and using a national sales tax. But alas, I am not the optimist you are, and don't expect we'll ever see it happen. :/
