As an outsider, it often appears like the president of the United States doesn't have the influence anymore he once (maybe) had. But this is due to other reasons. In the end he's only like the dummy who signs the treaties that people with bulging wallets want to have and by signing them he turns a megalomaniacal wish into a worldly law that everyone has to carry the can for.
I don't think it is that way at all - through crony capitalism IS a big issue. The primary effect of that cronyism now is in two areas: The Obama administration picking winners and losers based on who contributed to his campaigns, and the legalization of millions of illegal immigrants based upon their propensity to vote Democrat and offset the hated "white population".
The degree varies. Obama has very little respect for process, and not much integrity, so his white house is particularly prone to crony-ism. Additionally, regulatory capture has increased dramatically over the years, so the current president (regardless of who it is), has hugely more tools at their disposal to implement it.
I just want to take a moment here to say thank you. I have learned quite a bit from you about how to interact online. From your well-researched and fascinating perspective posts, to how you respond to Yama, to how you responded to me when I have, periodically, made an ass of myself on your journal, you have well and truly lived up to your userid. You've inspired me in many ways to be a better me.
You're very welcome, my friend. I am a long way from where I would like to be, but I am trying to face in a good direction even if I'm not moving quickly.
