I write here for my own amusement. (And I’m right here for your amusement too, perhaps.) While I make typographical mistakes (and appreciate the corrections and catches!), I strive to avoid them, and I do try to be careful with facts.

Writers for the Daily Mail in the UK have a larger audience, and one would think they’d be a bit more careful about ( Read more... )

While the level of proofreading/editing/linguistic competency is appalling (and appallingly widespread), I have one minor nitpick to point out. The article about Neanderthals comes from a British source, and in British English "homely" and "homey" are used somewhat differently than in American English; in The Hobbit Tolkien refers to Rivendell as "the Last Homely House" on the road to the ominous East. (I suspect that the headline was not written by the same person who wrote the body of the article.)

Off-topic, but until I'd read that excerpt, it had never occured to me that Neanderthals might NOT have used language. Huh.

Putting aside the obvious grammatical flubs, I wonder how one would use language for anything besides communication.

Minutes ago, I read of a car inspection sticker that said "infection" instead.
