Developing…

5,000+ more emails, and hundreds of thousands of more to be released at some future time.  [Update] So far, these appear to be an additional release from the same November 2009 ClimateGate harvest.  The Guardian has a story up.

As soon as someone starts talking about a "cause" in the political sense of the word, they have surrendered the scientist title to one of Advocate.

The BBC's article on this was overly spin laden, which considering who pays the bills there is unsurprising...

Hint: “you’re not helping the cause!” is not an actual quote from the e-mails.

I've searched the e-mails for "cause". Out of about 5300 mails there are three, where it isn't used in the sense of "causation". All of them are by Mann, two of them are obviously about the cause at hand in the specific e-mails, in both cases it's about defending his work in the scientific literature. There is ONE instance where you might - if you feel like it - imply political motive. I however read that instance as referring to "making the public get a good understanding of climate science".

Here's one context for a reference to "the cause": Michael Mann (of Hockey Stick fame) is outraged because climate scientist Judith Curry is actually engaging skeptical statistician McIntyre. In an email to him, Phil Jones had written: "What is Judith Curry doing talking to this lot ( ... )
