A satellite is preparing to re-enter the atmosphere. It is of some interest; it’s fairly big and some thousand pounds or so are expected to make it back to Earth. (Not in one piece.)

Good story, nice twist. I'm a bit curious about the "The local natives had surprised him." bit, though, IMO you don't resolve what exactly did surprise Lucas. Just their appearance or something they did?

I was trying to suggest that he'd been surprised by locals that looked exactly like the African Americans he was used to, but who had Chinese accents. This combination is common on Fiji.

A trivia bit: Decades ago, I met several times with Fiji government officials, and I was tapped to be the official government computer person of Fiji. I seriously considered it, but ultimately declined.

Except for the first and last little bits, this was a chapter from a much larger story that did not involve aliens at all.
