He hasn't gone to check on anyone after Mayfield's event, and in fact has only been at work the bare minimum required amount of time to not ( Read more... )

A Lithuanian flag?

[It just seems a little out of place in this imitation of a 1950s American town.]

Is it some sort of Lithuanian holiday today?

No, I just got this back in the mail--you recognize it?

[He's pleased; he's gotten used to people not recognizing Lithuanian symbols.]

Yes. I have been to many places.

[As an Enforcer, she often found herself travelling to various parts of the world on missions. Therefore, she has rudimentary knowledge of national symbols.]

Ah. I suppose it is important to you for some reason.

[She decides it is probably patriotism. Perhaps the man had a special attachment to his homeland.]

[Lithuania smiles.]

It is. It's a reminder of what I have waiting at home.

Family? Friends? People usually keep around momentos more specific than their country's flag.

[Then again, she has see weirder things being kept around for sentimental value.]

Ah--

[Well, the best way to explain is to introduce himself.]

I'm Lithuania. And you are?

...Is that a codename?

[She decides to answer his question.]

Bazett Fraga McRemitz.

In my world, every country has a personification.

It's nice to meet you, Miss McRemitz.

...

[Well, this is interesting. She has met many different types of magical creatures during her missions, but she has yet to meet the personification of a nation itself.]

...Nice to meet you, Lithuania.

I suppose it's strange to most people here. I never really thought it strange before I came to Mayfield.

Indeed, this place offers many new experiences.

[Some were nice, like the cutest first hero ever, and some not so much, like intelligent cannibalistic revenants.]

How would you define yourself, Lithuania? Are you your people, your government, or your territory? Are your abilities different from those of regular humans? How is it that you continue to exist here despite being cut off from that which allowed you to be in the first place?

I'm a bit stronger than a regular human, though not much. As for what I am...

[He gestures to the horse and rider on the flag.]

This symbol has been around almost as long as I have. As long as there's someone who remembers it, who thinks it's important, it still exists, right? Even if the people who think it's important are far away.

I understand.

[It seems that the nations operated a little bit like Heroic Spirits in that their power and existence were based at least partially off of memory. However, they did not seem to require a prana source to manifest.]

Then I suppose you must feel more out of place here than the non-nation residents do. It...must be very sad to not be connected to your people anymore.

It is unsettling. At least I'm not a human like I was when I showed up, it made everything even stranger.

[She can sympathize with that. She too had felt disoriented and strange when her powers had first been taken away. Even now, she dislikes feeling weaker than she is used to.]

I wonder if you can use your nation status to your advantage...Have you ever tried using the post office to summon one of your legendary heroes? Or perhaps your national defense force?

I don't think you can regain people like that--and I would never bring any of mine into Mayfield.

[There's a hint of something like parental protectiveness in the tone.]
