I really like this. I like that you explore the span before Spock's return to the Enterprise which could be read as obvious and immediate. I like that Spock is ever true to who his, Vulcan and human halves, meditates on this decision and then pursues his own path.
The writing is lovely, as always. I love the sea/sand dichotomy and then the way the stars are integrated to break the duality but not to make it into a threesome. Rather it seems to tie the two together. Human and Vulcan, both of stars.
I especially loved this line:
All he could see were stars, singing songs of sail.
and the ending:
After all, there were other songs, other tales, stories of home, she called them. We come from stars, another story goes, and we return to them. As stars we fall.
In his dreams, Spock the Younger heard new things. He could hear Captain Kirk. He could hear Nyota; he could hear the Enterprise.
They sounded like the sea.
