Rec: One Thousand Kisses Deep (Buffy)

Aug 26, 2009 12:29

I wish everyone could go read One Thousand Kisses Deep by seraphcelene. This writer always has poetic language and vivid imagery, but when I first read this what really got to me was the concept. I did some thinking about it and suggested some things to seraphcelene (which I took way too long on, sorry again, L), but what's remained is the core idea, which just gets me ( Read more... )

This is an amazing rec, and I'd read it anyway, but I'm gonna read it extra hard now.

I just. I love this fic. I have always loved this fic. But right now I find myself jiving on the fact it got written at all, like it's so deep and complex and twisted and really attempts to examine reality and identity and desire and power and shit, when at the same time, it's Buffy. I just. WE HAVE SHIT TO SAY, K. Whether it's, "hee here's my porn" or "alright guys, let's sit down and analyze the motherfucking universe." And it just is happy. (But it's a sad fic. Actually it's freaking terrifying, imo.)

Thanks for the rec, too. Sounds like it'll thump on my consequences kink nicely.

Hey! I am chuffed to see you posting about the Buffyverse. You've been away so long!

I know! I don't really lose interest in stuff when I love them *that* much, though my level of enthusiasm varies. Recently I've been trying to work on Star Trek fic, and keep thinking, "Dude! I had such *awesome* ideas for Buffyfic, why?" And then I think about things I wrote and realize it was because, oh yeah, BtVS is so fucking awesome, and just gives you so much to work with. Not that ST doesn't, but I just love mining the depths of Buffy, and how many of us find awesome stuff there. And one thing I love about BtVS far more than ST is it had girls.

Yeah, Trek is seriously lacking in estrogen. I primarily write slash* so I wouldn't find that a deterrent to fic writing; I just don't groove on the characters the same way as I do for the Buffyverse. Or even BSG.

*Though I did just post that threesome pegging fic...

BOOKMARKED, holy shit. LYNNE.

I don't find it a deterrent, but I do find lots of all the Kirk/Spock I want to write veering off in wild directions that have to do with women's studies, though.

I love that story. What's particularly great about it is how it made me think about the characters in new ways.

How are you?

Yeah! I love it when fic does that; sometimes I think that's what it's therefore.

I am SO GREAT. How are you? I really miss you, and fandom, and lj. Hope your family is well, too!

I am flattered (and embarrassed) beyond words. You're so enthusiastic about it that it makes ME enthusiastic about it. It a very real way I don't feel that One Thousand Kisses Deep is an enjoyable fic. I can't even really say that it's good or that I like it. It's just so damn bleak. And that's the point and it seems to do what I wanted it to do, so in that regards it is a success(?). What I find myself saying is that it is what it is. Whatever that may be.

Your beta was absolutely crucial and in the end I am proud of what I accomplished with it. It's still rough and awkward in places, but ... it is what it is and the reception has been so awesome. And, again, I really do feel a debt of gratitude because you were really instrumental in helping me pull it together. And then you say such nice things that I'm giddy and happy.

You are mad awesome, babe!! I hope everything is aces with you! New fandoms and old, real life and cyberspace.

Well, here's the thing. There are definitely some fics where the whole time I read them, I'm saying, "Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! So fun!" This is not one of those fics. The whole time I'm saying, "Ooooooooooh dear god, everything's fucked."

Some of my very favorite fics, I don't really want to reread. I liked them because I got emotional about them, and because they made me think hard, and made me squirm.

As I tried to say in this post, sometimes I wonder what the point of writing like that is. We do this for fun, this is our spare time, who wants to think or beat their brains out, aren't we all just here to get off? But the truth is, I enjoy beating my brains out. I enjoy working my ass off, if I've got something to say. And people enjoy reading it--in different ways, of course--but we enjoy thinking and insight and tearing the things we love apart. Which sounds utterly destructive, but the whole point of what we're doing as fans is seeing ( ... )
