[Sickbay, Kirks' room]

It was quiet, but for the soft hum of the monitors and machines at work. Too quiet, too still. Stillness and silence were not things Chris had ever associated with any Kirk, and the sight of both George and Jim lying battered and motionless - Jim only sleeping now, thank god, but George, nearest the door, in the coma state he hadn't come out of yet ( Read more... )

Winona took deep calming breaths as they approached the bed focusing on George just lying there in his coma state. She looked over at Jim with a sigh, still worried about him, but not to the extent she was with George. She bit her lip, trying not to cry.

"He's got to wake up, Chris. He has to."

"Let's wake him, then," said Chris softly, glancing up at her and over at the monitors showing George's heart and brain function - reassuring, that - before looking back at George's slack face.

He brushed George's short hair back off his forehead, and cradled George's cheek in his palm. Warm skin, scratchy with stubble. "Hey," he murmured. "We're both here, George. We miss you. Please, just - just come back to us."

Winona looked up at the monitors and found herself letting out a breath as she moved to stroke George's hair, since Chris had already taken his cheek.

She whispered, hoping that he could somehow still hear her. "We're here, George. This family needs you, you know, can't fix it without you. And you know how I get. Don't want to lose you again. I don't think Chris wants to either."

Doctors always said to talk to patients in a coma, reassure them. He hoped some of this was getting through to George, somehow.

"No. You better not die again or I swear I will kill you myself. And then I'll hand you over to Winnie so she can kill you again." Chris smoothed his thumb over the curve of George's cheekbone. "Jim's right across the room. He's gonna be okay, but he needs you. And so d-" He bit back 'Sam' just in time, pulse jumping at almost slipping. "- do we."

He leaned forward a bit. "I know you can hear us."
