A solution to the translations problem: try reading the so-called postcolonial authors. They usually write in English so you don't have to worry about a subpar translation. However, I've found that the Norton or Oxford World translations are usually pretty good. (Norton also gives you a ton of critical essays, which can be a mixed blessing.) Avoid Dover Thrift Editions like the plague.
