Enough America/Euro-centric thinking

I have one of those huge world maps in my room at home. Its copyrighted in 1990, meaning that it still has the USSR and no satellite states. I didn't really think too much about it till last year when Jess said she was headed to Bosnia, and I knew vaguely where that was but not exactly, and then I couldn't find it on my map. A solution to the translations problem: try reading the so-called postcolonial authors. They usually write in English so you don't have to worry about a subpar translation. However, I've found that the Norton or Oxford World translations are usually pretty good. (Norton also gives you a ton of critical essays, which can be a mixed blessing.) Avoid Dover Thrift Editions like the plague.
