Some things are planted to grow, others buried for good...or ill. We have lilies of the West, lilies of the Nile, honey and bees and missing buds. But here, too, are a beast beneath the basement, an underwater city, and dead hotels, memories of loss and memories sold. Last March, about six inches of raw sewage backed up into my mother’s basement. While slogging around down there to assess the damage, I found the doll exactly as you see it, as if it had clambered up the pile to escape the (wet) mess. Later the insurance co. hired a crew to box up everything that wasn’t ruined and store it in a truck-sized pod. Unloading the pod three months later, I found the doll in much the same position, sitting on top of the boxes. My mother collects dolls with something approaching a mania; I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Robert has a northern cousin…
