“I’m going to the ladies’ room,” Shirley announces as she stands up. “Britta, would you like to come with me?”

“I’ll come,” Annie offers.

“No, you stay here and keep these boys on track,” Shirley says. “After all, we need to boost our History grades. Britta will come with me, won’t you?”

She’s giving Britta a Look and it Means Something, so Britta narrows her eyes but nods and stands, hooking her bag over her shoulder. They’re quiet all the way out the study room and through the library, until the bathroom door closes behind them and Britta crosses her arms and leans against the sinks.

“Okay, Shirley, what’s up?”

Shirley puts her purse on the counter and looks at Britta through the mirror. “We gotta talk about Jeff.”

“Jeff?” Britta asks, surprised. “What about him?”

“Now you know I pride myself on being observant-”

“Nosy,” Britta interrupts.

“-and I’ve been watching closely because I knew as soon as you and Troy got together that there was going to be some sort of problem. And I was right
