Discuss (a bit biased, perhaps, on my part):

Why does Valjean get no love in the fandom?

I don't mean that people pretend he's not important to the story, but how many Valjean-fan communities/sites do you see? ;)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there already a 1200-page discussion on how much Valjean rocks? ;)

Ironically, recent productions of LM have cast rather attractive actors as Valjean (IMO, Drew Sarich, Oleh Vynnyk, JOJ, Sergio-Maurice Vaglio, etc.).

I remember just falling in love with Valjean when I read the book. I guess people don't like him as much becasue the people who usually take up the majority in fandom are women and teenaged girls, who'd rather relate to the girls or swoon over the younger guys, or heck, even Javert.

Chicks don't dig the good boys, just the bad ones. :) I think also, to some extent, and I am not very conversant with the fan fiction, Valjean is a pretty "finished" character at the end of the book. He's sort of resolved his issues, so to speak. So, when people look to "save" a character, others like Eponine and Javert and Grantaire jump more to mind. Why he doesn't get attention in discussion as much or why don't people make up episodes from say his prison days to write fan fiction about? (Or maybe they do?). I agree with coral_amber, he just doesn't appeal as readily to the majority fandom demographic (his identity is in very large part as a father, so that's less sexy?). He's my favorite character, btw, to chip in for Our Man Valjean.

I think it's because there's no question, he's an awesome character. Fandoms seem to be formed out of the fan debating with someone else about why their character is awesome. For every fandom character, there's another group or fandom who hate that character. Not with Valjean, everybody loves him, ha.
