Small 18th Century Costuming Geek Rant

Best therapy ever. Today I ran away and watched Amadeus and Dangerous Liaisons. I now feel about 40% better about the way my life is going.

I guess I could look at it like an adult and say college isn't supposed to be about making friends or whatever. Maybe I should pay more attention to classes and less attention to drama. All I know is I hit ( Read more... )

Amadeus <3

I just recently watched it on stage about a year ago and they used extensive puppetry and... Well. You'd have had to have seen it.

Great movie.

I obviously can't go a full year without watching Amadeus... as for Dangerous Liaisons, I first discovered it when my class was reading the book last semester. The professor mentioned there was a film that involved John Malkovich, and since I have a weird fascination with him (the first time I saw him was as Javert and the second was in Being John Malkovich... I think after the Malkovich Malkovich scene you can't NOT be a little amused/obsessed by him) I knew I had to see it. (I also knew I had to see it because the book itself was so incredible--written in the 18th century, but completely skanky! I love it.) I found it on youtube and the first scene was that epic sequence of the Vicomte and the Marquise getting dressed. The picture wasn't clear enough, so I literally paused it, got up from my computer, hopped on a bus to Target, and came back with the DVD in my hands. I locked myself in my room with the film while my friends went to a party, and by the time it was twenty minutes in I knew I was in love ( ... )

And the play has real porn. I may have had restricted view box seats for the Broadway revival, but they were not at all restricted for the letter writing scene. Ben Daniels, naked except for stockings, shoes, and good wig, and seen from the side instead of blocked by the maid he's banging.

One of the most attractive things I've ever seen, on stage or off.

(Ben Daniels is hotter than John Malkovich, who creeps me out, and you definitely don't get the lovely side view of his ass in that scene in the movie. Ok, so I was also pleased to be seeing Ben Daniels in a role that did not require a fugly moustache.)

Have you ever seen this? http://periodmovies.blogspot.com/

There's nothing wrong with ownining Marie Antoinette to look at the pretty, pretty costume. I remember after seeing the movie images of pink shiny jewels would just float across my mind.

"Even worse, Dangerous Liaisons is almost certainly meant to take place a teeny bit later than Amadeus, and since we know the trend was for everything to get bigger and bigger as the century progressed, that doesn't check out either ( ... )
