So, I think this is the best mini-series thingy ever (is it a mini series if it has 21 episodes? Or something else?).  It really is: there is so much angst and pretty people standing around with issues.  So far we have:

1. One male lead (Ling) with serious issues because a) he is the product of an extra-marital affair and b) he told his twin this

I replied to your post about recs on my lj, but I think Mars (and MG) are considered the best out there.

I am always so gleeful when I read that you really like it. There are quite a few twists coming up and yes, it's amazing how creeped out Tong Dao makes me. I have no idea how far you are in but there is a bit with the cigarette and him and Ling that is....urk.

I confess I just love watching QL/Ling together. So interesting.

I got your recs comment. Thanks. Strangely, I've never really gotten into anime. The whole pile seems so daunting. Someone recced some to me a while back on this journal when I posted about love triangles, so maybe I should start there, but I am a bit hesitant because I've not been bowled over by the anime I've seen (though does 'Howl' count? Because I loved that.)

But Mars: so amazingly good.

And the cigarette thing! Eek! And Tong Dao was so happy at the pain... I was also creeped out by how he totally manipulated QL when she went to visit him at the loony bin.

The fact that he doesn't seem to even feel the pain is really disturbing. The fact that he seems to bring out the absolute worst in Ling, ditto. Boy's a good button pusher (and then there is all that stuff about how Ling and his brother were sort of like Tong Dao and his guy (minus the sex hopefully) and it's all sorts of creepy

You can find it on ebay. It's also available for download at d-torrents. And it's also available on youtube. Because a lot of things have 'mars' in the title, for better search you should probably put in 'Mars barbie' or similar (Barbie is the first name of one of the leads).

I am finding it great, great pure melodramatic entertainment of the best sort. As dangermousie says below she got me into it - she was raving about it a while back and as she's one of my big sources for Bollywood recommendations I bought it and then things got too busy for me to watch it. And now I have time and am enjoying it so much. I got my copy on ebay for not that much but it does stick every so often (and once at a pivotal moment) as it is not an official copy, but I am sure there are better copies out there.
