math = art

“We are losing so many potentially gifted mathematicians-creative, intelligent people who rightly reject what appears to be a meaningless and sterile subject. They are simply too smart to waste their time on such piffle.”
- Lockhart’s Lament

I just read the first two pages and I'll definitely read the rest of it later!
Thanks for the link!
And boy, is he right! I don't think there was a single person in my grammar school class who understood that maths was a matter of creation and creativity, because that's not what the teachers show you...

OT: *huuuuuge hug*

OT2: I so love your new name *____* I laughed hard when you wrote that Voldemort-Waldemar entry <3

You're welcome! I found it via random browsing and was reluctant at first, but I found it extremely reassuring that someone finally admitted that hey, no, math is not useful -- but it can be pretty, and why isn't that allowed to be enough?
The way math is taught is ridiculous, although it's not that much different to how languages are taught. Fortunately, languages have a clear advantage: there are books and movies you can discover and new friends you can make. But even then most don't get better at English/French/Spanish/etc. ... seeing as there's more than enough of all of that available in your own language. Math has it worse, though. Although I think, if done correctly and with the same passion that goes into writing a novel or painting an image, books on math would sell much better!

OT: ♥ your hugs are my favorite, even if they're just online hugs

OT2: Thanks. XD Waldemar makes me think of Götterspeise for some reason though. Heh
