QUESTIONS.

1. Does anyone know when the hell lottery results are going to be posted? Am I somehow totally remiss in remembering that they went up in like MAY last year? Haverford's went up months ago! What's the hold up? I want to know who I'm TAing.

2. Does anyone here who knits (dogeared?) know of a good book or website or something for beginners? I ( Read more... )

Ooooo knitting! Well Stitch 'n' Bitch is a great bible, with instructions about how to do various stitches and techniques, as well as some patterns; Knitty has tons of free patterns, rated from easy to hard, and so does Ravelry, which is a whole knitting community. For learning how, though, I think that in person is the easiest way! Do you have a yarn shop near you? Lots of them have free or cheap classes! I think there's no substitute for having someone who can say, no, THIS way, and show you how to do the basics. :D

Since multiple people suggested Stitch 'n' Bitch, I figured I would order that off amazon and give it a shot. Alas, there is not a yarn shop anywhere particularly close, but I think there's a knitting club at school, once I'm back there. :D I will see what I can do with teaching myself from the book and online resources, and then maybe get a bit more help once I'm back. Thank you extra for the links! :* :* :* I knew you would have something, your lovely scarf is still keeping me warm during the winter. :D

Oh! By the way, since I assume you maybe have a copy (or at least experience) - what size/type of needles do I need? Do they come in sets or something? Is there a basic type of yarn that I could use to start? Does that depend on what I'm trying to make? My book will not get here until Wednesday, but I'm going to be in Ann Arbor on Monday and figured if I could pick some things up then, I might be able to start once it gets here! :D

It definitely depends on what you're trying to make! There are big needles and tiny needles and straight ones and circular ones and double-pointed ones. And same with yarn! SO many kinds! I would say that something like a simple scarf is probably a good starter project? In which case, find a yarn you like--and that's soft against your skin!--and it'll say right on the label what size needles they recommend for it (and yarn store people are great for helping out with that, too--how much yarn you'll need, what size needles, etc.). Good luck!!

I am completely unhelpful on the knitting front. My friend was the president of Knitting Club in high school and even she gave up on me after a couple lessons. I've heard good things about Stitch n Bitch though? (And well, the title always made me laugh at Borders.)

I'm so psyched about going back to BMC- especially hanging out with Britt and Mer since they'll be living in Merion!

I've made up a list of things I need to get for my single (no mooching off my former roomie's fan) and the thought of transporting everything is terrifying. And rain boots. I never knew anywhere could rain as much as Bryn Mawr.

Kudos on yoga and I hope the rest of your summer is less stressful!

Knitting Help is one that I use, because it was helpful when I was trying to reteach myself what little knitting I had known. Now I am making a seemingly neverending scarf-type thing where I don't get overly critical about my stitches and use as a slightly mindless calming technique.

As I recall from the Mawr, there are many MANY knitters around, so I'm sure once you get back you will have plenty of people to ask.

Woo for HA-ing! I listened to lots of issues/drama/etc. about room stuff while I was on ResCo and Special Cases (and my senior year there were lots of people who decided that to room with the random bff they'd made from prospective weekend... it was special), so let me know if you need any advice or someone to blather at.

:oD
