My Scooter and Human Psychology

People are weird. So, I have my nifty little scooter and it is really useful for letting me go on trips without exhausting myself. I can ride it on BART into Berkeley. I can ride it to the grocery store and use it while I shop. I can ride it to the mall. It's a useful device ( Read more... )

Actually, this particular powered wheelchair would no doubt draw the "Oh, cool" reactions:

OK, I'm curious. Your hat and pendant are disability devices? As in, assistive technology?

My pendant is a magnifier. It's this but I have it on a metal chain.

My hat is worn because my eyes are too photophobic for normal sunlight. I tried sunglasses, but too much light got around them and it was hard to see, the hat helps a lot.

As they are both items I wear because of disability rather than for their own aesthetic value and things I didn't need before my disabilities, I think of them as disability aids.

My stepmom's got a power chair. When I was a kid, she used crutches for almost everything, then started using an Amigo scooter at work. Maybe ten years ago (in her 50s), she graduated to the power chair. She can't stand on her own at all anymore, so it was the most sensible option. She and Dad have a kneeling van to make it easier to transition to driving ( ... )

See the comment above about my hat and pendant.

Power chairs really do seem great. I am going to get one at some point; they're just more expensive than a scooter and won't be useful with cars that don't have lifts, which will be basically any car I'd want to use it with.

Is this an entry that you would be willing to post a public version of? I encountered someone who was struggling with shyness issues about appearing in public driving their scooter.

I've made it public. I usually put the disability stuff in friends-only, plus I didn't explain some of the details that might be confusing to the general public, but it's fine as a public post.

I recently did get a power wheelchair, although I haven't posted about it. It does seem to be better, although it has the same top speed in this case as my scooter. I haven't used it much yet though, so I don't have much to say about it. I expect it'll make some things much easier though.
