I love TBL, but I'm The Magic Mountain is one of those books I'm embarrassed to say I never got around to reading. (I've only read Royal Highness by Mann, although I've got a few others kicking around in my to-read pile).

I need to think about the isolation thing and the Dude some more.

Granted, The Big Lebowski is basically a big shambling heap of nothing piled on top of The Big Sleep, but I do think there's a thread going on about foreign affairs and most Americans' distance from them. It continues with Walter's belligerent memories about Vietnam (which no one cares about).

I have never heard of Royal Highness. Will have to look that up. Nothing much happens in The Magic Mountain, but it's the way it doesn't happen. Lots of philosophical chatter between the inmates of the sanitorium (health kind).
