You have a writing style that's so pleasant and smooth to read (if that makes sense?). Plus, I'm always a sucker for permanent injury. :-) I'd love to see this become a verse, but if not, it's a fantastic two-shot as is. Thanks for posting!

Beautifully written, everyone is in character, horrifically vivid description, and the guilt is so well done. Of course, Dean always feels guilty when anything happens to Sammy, even when he's not to blame; but John is so often written as uncaring. Your writing leaves no doubt in the reader's mind that John is thinking the same thing Dean did: He was supposed to be in school. -- and beating himself up over it
