I've heard similar discussions at writers' forums over whether authors should specialize in particular genres. Everything depends on the particular author's temperament, but my situation is similar to yours: I find that, when I run out of steam in one area, I can simply switch over to another area, then switch back at a later point.
But yes, actually finishing projects can be a challenge for me as well. I've found from experience that it's a lot easier for me to write short fiction (which, in my case, usually means novellas) than to tackle novels. There's a sense of accomplishment at getting something done that helps drive me into the next project. And I can simply turn those novellas into a series that becomes a novel if I wish; that's how Rebirth was written.
