George R.R. Martin's fifth book in the series, "A Dance With Dragons" has a publication date, apparently: July 12, 2011.

So that's interesting. I also read the first book in the Kushiel's series; more on that later.

[Edited to add: Also on his website and also at his LJ, along with a swanky new trailer for the TV show, if you're into it.

They get less smutty and more political as it goes on, and I believe overall better.

You mean the Kushiel's series? Yes, I will almost certainly pick up the next one in the series, although not right away; I have other books to devour first.

I did generally like it. Carey is a very sympathetic author toward her audience, and we always have plenty of warning when something bad is going to happen (in stark contrast to Mr. RR. Martin (get it? "stark"?! HAHAHAHAHA oohh fuck yeah. haven't lost it.)).

Really, in the whole first book, there was only one scene that made me seriously unhappy. Specifically...

[SPOILER WARNING]... when they're on the island of the Master of the Straits, having returned from [England] and Phedre figures out that the only way they can leave is for someone to stick around, to take his place ( ... )
