got here via craftgrrl...you know, rather than manhattan you might try places like 'wick in williamsburg et cetera. the places aren't fully carved out yet and you can find great lofts fairly cheap still...my sister just found an amazing, big loft not all that long ago...
Hi! You know what, I was looking at the community website for that area last night. Williamsburg is beautiful! I like that area, I wasn't too sure about moving there because I couldn't find any info on how close Williamsburg is to Manhattan. Your sister is so lucky! I love lofts, but what do you consider cheap? I'm thinking $950-$1200 is all I could handle without a roommate until I am able to get established. I'm sure I will most likely get a roommate, so I will definitely look into moving to Williamsburg again instead of Manhattan because it's so expensive. Thanks for the help :)
i think her and her boyfriend pay $1600 for the loft? but it's reaaaally big. there are a lot of great rent controlled areas of williamsburg still though. she's currently the montrose ave stop on the L train, used to be the graham ave stop. it's maybe a 15 minute trip into union square on the L so it's not too long. bedford (the stop before graham ave i think, or maybe its two stops before? i think it goes bedford, lorimer, graham) is a really artsy area with lots of cool DIY stores and thrift shops...but that area might have gone up due to the fact all the artsy musician kids were living there a couple years back...the area where she is now is sorta the new bedford. i know the building she lives in has a myspace hahaha i'll see if i can find it. but yeah it seems that area is the 'new frontier' so to speak...they're settling right up to wear the projects are now.
I live here in NYC and my rent is actually pretty afordable, of corse I have 2 roomates but the place is nice. I think you should definately give it a shot.
...by the way, I don't remember taking you off my list but for some reason you're off. If you deleted me its cool, just was wondering what happened.
I know! You are so right. I have to give it a shot because I love that damn NYC so much! I have my heart set on living in Manhattan, but everybody keeps pushing me towards Brooklyn. At this point, it doesn't matter as long as I get to NY. Are you in a loft or an apartment?
Yea I know this response is way later than the original post but, I have to agree with what the other folks are saying about choosing Brooklyn over Manhattan. If you are just starting out in NYC Brooklyn might be the better choice because -rent is considerably less and you can still find a nice place and still get the NYC experience(like I did) -getting into Manhattan from BK is a piece of cake, only takes bout 20-30min on the train depending where you are going.
But yea I have an apartment myself which is great, but I have several friends who have lofts as well so either one is ok. Good Luck with this, I hope you make the move.
I know I didn't delete you because I do read your lj. Actually, the last post I saw from you on my friends list was about you and your friends at an outing;) I just thought you hadn't posted since.
I was always getting bumped from the friend list of wrenniebird, and we'd both have a bitch fit. But anyway, I put you back on, so please put me back on your list. Thanks for telling me :)
