It is refreshing to send out positive emails to the Muse (literary magazine) staff! I have tried to be a good and understanding leader, but I often feel like I'm having to constantly nag people. Won't your experience in Senegal distinguish you as someone worldly? Also, I thought you were going to get an internship in Memphis (was it Memphis?) this summer. It's a tough decision-- how ill is your mom? I think that is probably the thing that ultimately sways it one way or the other. One thing you might want to consider is doing Peace Corps between undergrad and grad, but I'm not sure if you want to take a break or not.

My thought is: apply for the grant and research options for safer travel to Africa (groups going, a University perhaps to keep an eye out for you). GO for a little while, and spend the rest of the time hanging out with Mom. There is room in life for compromise, rather than absolutes.
