Chapter 4 His precious Sakura tree was flat, crushed onto the ground like someone had stepped onto it and made sure it died, it was obvious from the footsteps that were clearly all over the place, cruelly, inviting his anger and tears. Gently, he picked the remaining leaves, the fragile branches and roots that crumbled upon touch, picking the broken pieces little by little, with heavy tears rained down on his face. He made a tiny hole at the place where the tree originally was and buried the whole remaining pieces in it.
Jun clasped his dirty hands and prayed, while continuously sobbing. He wondered who was cruel enough to destroy his plant. No one knew about it except the gardener, but he was pretty sure it wasn’t the gardener who was the culprit, why, he didn’t even know. After tiring himself out of crying, he went back to sleep, his mind was already started his plan to find new seeds to grow a new plant to replace his former baby.
It was like a miracle, he thought the next day when he managed to find some seeds that weren’t swept away by the gardener, when he saw a young Sakura tree obviously bigger and older than his former plant was already in place, replacing his destroyed tree. He looked left, right and on his back to see who had planted it, but he saw no one. He asked the gardener later but the gardener just shrugged, also bewildered. Jun guessed that god took pity on him thus replacing his lost with something better and thus he made his prayer, and inadvertently making the place surrounding the tree like his personal shrine.
This time he took care of it more attentively than before, watered it and talking to it every day and since then the tree was never disturbed anymore.
A few months later, Jun heard that the daimyo would travel to Edo to reside for a year in the capital as per policy of the Shogun and his son would follow too, and after a full year of attending to the shogunate, the daimyo would return to his castle again without his family. The cycle went continuously each year, they said. Jun didn’t have particular interest in knowing the fact since his life was the same, with or without the present of the daimyo, and thus he lived his life as always, managing to get though every single day barely alive.
Five years later…
He knew something was up when he started to be given milder works inside the castle. Things like sending food to the samurais, dusting their rooms and wiping their floors; the things that usually more senior servants would do. It happened since many months ago, it was subtle at first but the intensity gathered little by little until Jun felt it electrified him making the hair on the back of his head stood. He heard stories, stories that made him very suspicious and weary.
Before, Jun never thought that he one day would become the object of anyone desires. Who would lust over someone so undesirable and ugly like him? he always thought. Jun thought it was pretty stupid. He had no time to find pleasure in this world, moreover being the object of pleasure. His confidence had been shot down until he saw nothing nice about him, because he was doomed to be a slave and would forever be a slave. He had no hope for future because he always saw them bleak. The only colourful thing to him was his tree and that tree only producing her colourful flowers once in a year. Anything else for him was grey.
Even the sky, even the grass.
Thus it no wonder that he saw himself grey, as grey as the cloudy storm far away in the horizon.
He had no qualm about dirtying himself, he didn’t even blink an eye even if he was to carry all those buckets full of human faeces, because he never felt the need to be physically pleasing to others.
No one would notice him, he mused, no one would like him, he wished and he had no problem with that, in fact he welcomed it.
But the problem was no one could stop god’s work of nature. While he was always covered by dust and smelly sweat, he never realised, under those ugly-looking work robes, a swan started to appear.
People started to notice. It wasn’t the servants around him though, but surprisingly the retainers that worked for the daimyo, that mostly resided on their own quarters or the main palace of the daimyo. It all started when he had accidentally collided into one on his way to visit his tree. It was a particularly a dark night, there was not a single star on the sky, and in a particularly miscalculation on his part he crashed into a middle-age samurai who was strolling the area. While being buried underneath the samurai which had fallen on top of him, he thought that he would definitely be punished for walking at night without any particular reason but the opposite happened. He was let go without a single scolding or punishment and he had thank every deities ever existed for saving him.
Jun felt he was lucky that night that he had met a good-hearted samurai but without him realising, it was the start of his current predicament.
*
He could feel eyes following him wherever he went. Up until then nothing happened to him but he was out of his luck that day when somebody grabbed him by his waist from behind while he was carrying a tray of cups on his hand along the corridor. The brass cups fell clattered onto the floor, the noise reverberating along the wall.
The man was breathing down his neck, smelling him. Jun’s heart thumping hard in his chest, his body shivered in fright. He never expected that finally one of them made a move on him. He tried to avoid the lusty eyes that had been following him ever since he was assigned to work near the samurais but now the luck had run away from him.
“You smell so good, boy…”
He trembled more violently when he felt a pair of lips started roaming his neck. He closed his eyes in disgust.
“Please let me go…” he whimpered weakly. It had come to his knowledge that some of the retainers liked to play with boys in that house, but he never thought that he would be one of their victims. He wanted to get away, but he was weak against the monster that was holding him, clutching him tightly on his waist.
“Please…”
“… You look so delicious today…”
Jun shivered even more, he was so disgusted by that remark. Liken him with food? What was him? A piece of chicken?
Jun was nearly in tears when suddenly he heard someone cleared his throat in front of them, and at the same time he was let go. Jun fell onto the floor with a thud, since his knees were so weak they couldn’t support him anymore. His hand trembled when he slowly picked up the fortunately empty cups when he heard the man behind him scrambled away after being told off by the newly-arrived man. Jun didn’t even attempt to look at the person who had come to save him. He didn’t care at all as a pearl of tear fell down onto his cheek.
He froze when a hand lifted up one of the cup that he was sloppily gathered and put it on the tray.
Please, not another one…
He didn’t lift up his eyes even when the person crouched in front of him. He felt a hand raised his chin up. Jun closed his eyes, more tears falling down his cheek, in fear and in shame. He could feel a set of eyes piercing him but he refused to open his eyes.
“It’s your own fault you know …” A manly voice said to him sardonically.
Jun opened his eyes and looked at the person in front of him in an instance. What?
