I'm on the verge.

Jul 07, 2009 14:04

So very, very close to changing an irrepressible aspect of my life (and yes, it's kept me up until 4am, just thinking about it), but I'm forcing myself to sleep on it and take action (or not) in the morning. [lol, and of course, promptly fell asleep as I was writing this entry last night]I am mentally committing to a greener menstrual cycle. It ( Read more... )

Good for you. (No sarcasm intended). That's just one of those things that I can't get in to. I have never even tried a pad because the thought disgusts me. Even tampons disgust me but at least I don't feel them. I wish I could get on board with this but damn, it's just one of those things with me. :0(

Heh. I have to admit that periods are by no means PLEASANT exactly, but I think they don't necessarily have to fill a woman with bitterness every month. I hear going reusable helps in coming to terms with your own cycle, which might be what I need to just accept it in a way that doesn't mean pretending it doesn't exist.

But wow. You've never used a pad? Not even in the beginning stages when you first got your period? That's pretty impressive. For me, getting myself to use a tampon for the first time was terrifying.

Nope, I figured it out on my own and never looked back. At first it sucked because you know you can never place them correctly the first time and then you can feel it, but the thought of wearing like, a diaper, frightens me for some reason. I think it's just a phobia of mine.

I have heard it helps with the cycle too. I really wish it didn't freak me out as much as it does.

You can keep the gift you had intended for me XD

Sorry. I am just a little old fashioned. I'd even be okay with the washable/reusable pads. But no cup. No thanks. You are a braver woman than I.

What a terribly appropriate time of the month to be discussing this ;)

Also, Nate: ROFLMAO

LOL. Hey, if you really wanted to go old-fashioned, you'd totally switch to cloth pads. XD

Nah, I know that tampons/cups aren't for everyone. But if I end up liking the cloth pads, you are so gonna get one, lol.

oh gosh, the thought of going green kind of grosses me out. I hate hate hate leakage...

Haha, but the idea isn't to be grossed out about your period, it's to accept it and not feel uncomfortable while you have it. I've heard with the cups, you don't feel them at all and most women don't experience any leakage with them.

What I like most about the cloth pad idea is the comfort aspect. I hate the feeling of most pads and the sound of them shifting just makes me cringe. I totally like the idea of something soft and natural cozying up to me instead. XD

Whee, I'll have to keep everyone posted with how it goes! XD I expect a few failures before I get the hang of it...

I had one month where I was 100% "green"- I was out of pads and poor as hell so I used old rags. XD That was an interesting time. It wasn't as constructed or thought out as the sites you linked to, by any means, but it, er, did the job.

I know some people knit or crochet their own reusable pads, too.

Hee hee hee, yeah, I think I remember you telling me about it. While I'm sure it wasn't "awesome," I find that SO interesting. I mean, it's just so medieval. XD

I'm trying to imagine knit or crochet pads and it just baffles me. I'd imagine textured yarn to be chaffing down there. But maybe they use baby-soft yarn. XD

I'll be the guinea pig everyone can live vicariously through. We'll see how it goes. :)

I really did feel like I was in touch with my womanly ancestral roots. Hell, even Irene had to use rags as a young woman!

And while it's not THE most sanitary thing in the world, if you quickly take them out when you're done and rinse them in the sink, you don't end up with a big OMG WTF IS THIS IN THE LAUNDRY incident later. XD

I thought that about the crocheted pads, too. I'd think I would lose my mind with itchy ass yarn. But who knows! I guess you could also theoretically weave one using old strips of rag.

"Hello, Lisa! I am weaving on a loom!"

I'm not sure what you mean with it not being the most "sanitary" thing...I think washing right away would be more sanitary than "leaving them" to fester. XD

Also, I'm under the impression that your menstrual fluid isn't awful or anything. With the washable pads, you're supposed to rinse them, then soak them in a bucket of cold water, changing out the water daily until you're ready to launder the lot of them. Supposedly, they don't stain horridly. And some women say that they use the bloody water to water their plants and claim their plants have never been healthier! XD

I also had a horrid image of the largest cloth pad ever made on a loom. XD
