Sleepers

Sleepers are my favorite cars. Ever since my dad used turbo Volvo Wagons to piss off Corvette drivers in front of their dates, I realized they are the most fun vehicles to own. The wagon "Looked like it was standing still even when it was doing 90".

Much like this minivan beating a Mustang:

I always thought the early sixties Detroit factory drag cars were the ultimate sleepers. 1964 Dodge 440 - no frills grampa car with a 426 Max Wedge (precurser to the Hemi) stuffed in it. Even better - 1967 Dodge Coronet WO23 and Plymouth Belvedere II RO23. These cars had no emblems or radios, came with steel wheels and rubber floor mats. They had no insulation and one color paint schemes. Black vinyl interiors. Also came with 426 Hemi and aluminum front clip ( ... )

Those are the true Beach Boys definition of sleeper to me. Though they may have been refering to earlier, stationwagon versions of the Fords and Chevys.

Just think what 675 horses would do in a modern, lighter car...with seatbelts.

you don't know me but....i used to have an '87 fiero gt and i'll testify to the fact that it out performed anything thrown at me, through 3rd gear, minus a tuned nissan 300zx. my friend had at the time an 83 944 and it couldn't touch my fiero until 4th gear. that was with the base v6, i believe a 3.1 liter. (it's been a few years) awesome lines on that car too. much more curvy back window and front ground effect. not as angular as previous years. shame those cars are fire hazards man. i miss it.

In the right trim, a Fiero should not be underestimated. I'm actually thinking of racing my 2m6 notchback in a Sport 3 series. The fastbacks like yours look a lot better, but they weighed more. Most surviving v6s are bored out to 3.1 by now, but mine is still stock (2.8)...yet I'll have to go up against BMWs and Porsches in the circuits rules (they arent stupid).

By 85, the fire situation was sorted out with recalls and redesigns, but not with public perception. The next generation actually didn't look as good. Maybe it's a good thing they didn't produce them.
