I have no theories about all the apocalypse love! But your exploding feelings (and subsequent distress) over this show are such fun to watch. Also, so envious over your electric sunshine; I would like some too, please.

WELL I'M SO GLAD YOU'RE ENJOYING MY PAIN:P

Srsly, it is ridiculous, because I'm sitting there screaming at the computer, "Show, how can you be so fucking sexist?" but I cannot turn it off to save my life. I really do wonder how I'd fare in a zombie apocalypse. Not well, I fear. My crossbow skills are poor.

You guys don't have sunshine? Today's the kind of day when I remember I can occasionally get along with spring. I will wish you sunshine ASAP!

I went and got some TWD icons. I am the world's most embarrassing human. How long until your show starts up again? It's quite soon, yeah?

SO MUCH I AM ENJOYING YOUR PAIN. Also your shiny new icons! I definitely feel you, how the shipping and apocalypse are fabulous but the sexism and grossness are just really not. It's frustrating to have a show be simultaneously great and awful.

No sunshine here, just lots of blah grayness. Tomorrow's supposed to be both sunny and warm, so here's hoping for that. Thanks for the good thoughts!

AND YES, my show starts in exactly a month. Soooo probably in exactly a month you'll get to bear witness to my emotional distress over it, it's kind of already starting, I don't know I just have a lot of feelings I guess.

It's kinda interesting, because for all my issues with 24, I can't recall ever being angry with them about sexism. They treated Kim's character like shit, but I don't think it was because she was a girl. But hell yes it's annoying to feel this compelled to watch something but also to not be able to make it through ten minutes of an episode without going MOTHER OF FUCKING THINGS WITH MOTHERS. Like last night one of the chicks managed to have a car accident when she was the only one on the road. ARGH.

Yay sun! Just got back from my sun and with my ludicrous skin, I probably have a sunburn.

FEELINGS ARE THE BEST. I cannot wait to hear all about your feelings and also lowriseflare's. It's gonna be GREAT.

So, is that article accurate in its criticisms of TWD, do you think?

I like a good apocalypse because it deconstructs the societies we have constructed for ourselves, and allows us to question our choices. What if we lived on Planet X, where guns were controlled? What if classes were divided not along economic lines, but roles in the supply chain? What is the role of the media and should the gov't tell people the truth, when the truth sucks? Is it okay for rebels to manipulate the media for a good cause?

And then there's the people coming through for each other in surprising ways. Really, I suppose, it's another variation of my Seekrit Identity kink: something happens that reveals who they really are. So I'm totally with you on that one.

Apocalypses I love: BSG, TGH, Divergent, 24 (it's ongoing apocalypse avoidance, so it counts, right?) The Matrix, 1984, even though I haven't read it since then, and it was depressing as fuck, it stayed with me. I'm sure there are others. There was a book that I cannot remember the name of, but marinw ... )

I tried to read that piece as objectively as I can, given how much I love the characters on the show, and no, I don't think it's accurate. What makes me puzzled I guess is the idea that the apocalypse has to be about one thing. I mean yes, some apocalyptic fiction is about one aspect of how we might behave. But (and I'm discounting the Merle reference in that article, because I have barely met him yet) TWD deals with a million situations that have me asking myself, "Holy shit. What would *I* do ( ... )

There's casting? I didn't know they were making a movie. I don't really know any actors in that age group. As long as whatsherface who played Bella, in fact, as long as NO ONE from the Twilight cast is in it, I'm pretty good.

Hmmm. I didn't get that from the article. I'll have to read it again.

Yeah a ton of the casting is done, and I'm not sure how I feel about Tris's parents. Hmm. LOL, omg please nothing from Twilight. I can't deal with that at all.

I think what I meant, and probably mangled terribly, is that this article seemed to be suggesting that the "good" apocalypses kind of put one aspect of our social structure into high relief. And okay sure, I'm not going to argue with that. TWD is uneven on the best day, no doubt. But I still see it as a show that isn't trying to be about racism or sexism (wow they're failing there!) or any ism, but really about humanism? Wow I totally just quoted a Meredith Brooks song, more or less. I just see various situations popping up that make me ask the really hard questions about what I'd be willing to sacrifice, what I'd be willing to do and for whom.

IIRC an Overthinking It Podcast explored the legal ramification of zombieness. For example, if your spouse becomes a zombie, can you still collect on his life insurance policy? In the eyes of the law is dead the same as undead?

Oh man, it's awesome that they did one. In the TWD world though, the entire thing is moot, given that there is nothing left of government, law, or any mechanism of monetary exchange. It's actually pretty freaky, because the damn show makes you care a lot about these people, when in so many ways there are bound to be limited resources and when there's only so much of something to go around, the choices get rough. I'm loving it though, although I'm still waiting for them NOT to treat all the women like total dipshits who can't find their asses with a funnel.

I obviously can't speak for The Walking Dead because I've never seen it, but I agree with what you said about characters in an apocalypse- you get to see them as they really are, and it's so interesting to me to see what actions they believe are the right ones to take to get certain things done, and how a lot of times people have to do really difficult things in order to make things better, and how sometimes even the people who initially seem to be on the protagonists' side can end up not being that way (like President Coin) and idk how to put my thoughts into words but I just find this genre so interesting. My favorites that I can think of are The Hunger Games, Divergent, Chaos Walking, 24, (does Fahrenheit 451 count?), and there was this book I read a couple years ago called The Declaration (which I just looked up because I forgot the title) and apparently it's a trilogy, so I definitely want to reread the first book and read the other two again as well at some point.

Did you paint your toenails the Renee color? :D

I swear that freakin' TWD makes 24 look like a fluffy birthday party. STUPID SHOW. It screws with my brain in that just when I think I either 100% agree or 100% disagree with a character, that character does or says something that makes me rethink my entire perspective. It's also hard to adjust the brain to a world where seriously there is no form of government or law enforcement at all. Augh scary.

I totally need to try Chaos Walking and hell yes Fahrenheit 451 counts! I love that book so much.

I did paint them the Renee color, AND IT IS AWESOME. Thank you so much for the heads up on that one! ♥
