Oh, man, that is a really interesting article. I know you and I vary with how much violence the kids get to watch. In general, I'm more comfortable with violence because it tends to be more straightforward: good guys do what needs doing and bad guys get theirs. We try to avoid things where the good guys are the ones being crazy violent, which is why 24 will have to wait.
But sex, now. Yeah, sex on TV and in the movies is so rarely depicted positively. The ubiquitous of the stripper scene in so many cop shows does give one pause. BN is terrible for gratuitous 'eye candy' shots of bikini-clad T&A, but at least Fiona has agency out the wazoo, and is frequently dominant when it comes to sex. Even if there is a fair element of violence in Fi and Michael's relationship that is, frankly, messed up.So it was kind of shocking to have the writer point out that there is more sex in one ep of current cable TV than she glimpsed her entire adolescence, although re-watching things like McGyver, I'm always surprised at how much there was

I am actually amused by the fact that although I was raised in a very strict Seventh-Day Adventist environment, I seem to have grown up with healthier attitudes about sex than pretty much 90% of women I talk to. And it makes me so curious. I don't know. Nobody policed what I read (at least not every well), which resulted in me growing up on way too many of my sister's horrible romance novels. When I was ten I thought that every woman who had sex was a virgin who came three times before the guy was even IN her and then like, again when he finally was. And also the earth moved every time he touched her and he had a shaft of steel.
But I guess I was also allowed to watch a lot more sex than I was violence and to be honest, a lot of the sex I got to watch was relatively positive. At 14, my favorite romantic movie was Out of Africa, and whatever problems the real relationship between Denys and Karen may have had, the sexuality in the movie is very positive. My brain also automatically flips to soap operas, which were this giant staple of

So many hours of my junior high summers were spent wading through the gigantic paper bag of Harlequins that my bff and I bought at a garage sale. Old school Harlequins, the kind where the more the man seemed to hate the woman, the more he was actually trying to resist his incredible attraction to and love for her. Because loving her would change his life! I totally fell for it. Sigh.
Oh! Lego Mindstorms are programmable Lego robots. They're insanely expensive, but really, not as much as the PS3 when all is said and done. And super cool. A. was looking at university and college brochures a while ago (sob!) and says he's interested in robotics and prosthetics. So this would be a good way for him to really check it out

I seem suddenly to have made it a habit of not finishing shows I really like. Victims within the last couple years include Dollhouse and BSG, and BSG is absolutely one of my top five favorite shows of all time. I just can't DO it. I don't know.
Woah, those Mindstorm things are cool! But yeah, we're already out of our price range with what we're getting and that's a whole new level, damn. It's nifty that you can do that for A though, if he's into robotics and such things. They look insanely nifty.
Wait, what about interpretive signs in S1? I am LOST.
That commercial is pretty hilarious. I do love that he's willing to do that stuff, because being able to laugh at yourself is so damn attractive. But these .gifs! Holy hell.
Well all the sad of Melancholia would override the Kiefer hotness for me, so probably I'd choose rewatches of 24 over that. At least Touch usually winds up semi happy despite the sap factor, right?
My theory is that people hate Touch for the same reason why Cloud Atlas was such a flop. We are so used to cynicism and darkness we aren't quite sure what to do with the opposite. Yes, Touch is sappy. Yet my Kiefer Bias has me asking myself if sap is such a bad thing. Or at least I'm finding Kiefer-related sap is tolerable.
In the couple eps of Touch I did watch, my sense was that for me, it would have gone down better with better dialogue and better actors for the bit parts. Kiefer can sell me anything (unless it involves Rena Sofer), but when so much of what's going on hinges on actors who have to make an impression in very small roles, it feels to me as if they could try a little harder. Probably I have no room to talk when I've seen exactly two eps!

If you feel in need of more Kiefery hotness, see Melancholia. I wish I had news of The Reluctant Fundamentalist but I don't
