Now here we have Kropotkin, shot Potemkin in the Botkin

Things I've learned from the Olympics so far:

-Only three African nations sent competitors to the 2014 winter Olympics.

-Nepal has the only non-rectangular flag in the world.

-The single athlete Nepal sent to this Olympics is honest-to-God named Sherpa. His name is Dachhiri Sherpa, and he seems pretty damn awesome ( Read more... )

"Learn to Do It"! God knows we've listened to that song enough. Also, did you know that "Journey to the Past" was nominated for an Oscar? Somehow this cracks me up.

It probably cracks you up because every single song in Anastasia is hilarious on some level. Then again, Hard Out Here for a Pimp is an Oscar winning song, so...

This is probably lame, but I feel bad for the athletes who are the only athletes representing their country. Yes, you get to carry your country's flag and both the opening AND closing ceremony, but wouldn't it be lonely? And does like the guy from Nepal have to bunk with the only dude from Luxumbourg? But the solo athletes (and ones from not-traditionally-known-for-winter-sports) are my faves in the opening ceremonies, they're just so happy to be there & look to be having an awesome time.

(Nepal guy was also cool because the announcers said he was all "I know I'm going to come in last, I just want to get other kids in my country to get interested in skiing". And he's like a brick layer or something?)

(Oh and the flag bearer from Mexico sounds awesome. He's like the son of a European aristocrat, in his 50s, a pop singer, artist, etc etc etc. They should make a movie about him.)

They all were super happy! It is a little sad, but a lot of them aren't actually from whatever country in the traditional sense (like the one girl from Paraguay actually grew up in Massachusetts) so they probably have friends from other places. I think it would be more lonely if they were there ALL ALONE but there's coaches and trainers and parents (because DEAR GOD half these people are BABIES) and stuff.

He is a brick layer! That was my favorite detail, lol. I kind of love that guy from Mexico, did you see his uniform? It's like a matador outfit.

I did see the matador outfit! I wonder when his event is (I hope I haven't missed it), I want to see him ski. (I'm always bummed when the announcers point out some interesting athlete in the opening ceremonies but then never show them compete grrr. I mean I know they can't show every single athlete, but it'd be nice if they kept tabs on some of the ones they make a point of talking about at the OC.)
